How to Prepare Your Car for an Illinois Winter

admin April 15, 2026

Illinois winters don’t mess around. Between the sub-zero temperatures, lake effect snow, road salt, and ice, your vehicle takes a beating from November through March. The question isn’t whether winter will stress your car—it’s whether your car is ready for it.

At McClure’s Garage, we’ve been helping Lake County drivers survive winters since 1910. That’s over 100 winters’ worth of experience. Here’s what we recommend to get your vehicle ready for the cold months ahead.

1. Check Your Battery

Why it matters: Cold temperatures are brutal on car batteries. At 32°F, a battery loses about 35% of its power. At 0°F, it loses up to 60%.

  • Have your battery tested (we do this for free)
  • Check that terminals are clean and tight
  • Look for corrosion (white or green buildup)

Pro tip: Batteries rarely give warning before they die. Replace yours if it’s over 3–4 years old before you’re stranded.

2. Check Your Antifreeze/Coolant

Why it matters: Antifreeze keeps your engine from freezing and cracking. If it’s weak or diluted, it won’t protect your engine.

  • Test for a proper 50/50 mix concentration
  • Check levels and inspect for leaks
  • Consider a flush if the fluid is over 5 years old

Pro tip: Don’t just add water; it dilutes protection. Use the proper coolant mix.

3. Inspect Your Tires

Why it matters: Worn tires can’t grip icy or snowy roads properly. Your tires are your only contact with the road.

  • Check tread depth (use the penny test)
  • Monitor tire pressure (it drops 1 PSI for every 10°F temperature drop)
  • Consider dedicated winter tires for heavy snow

Pro tip: All-season tires are a compromise. For serious winter conditions, dedicated snow tires make a huge difference.

4. Test Your Heater and Defroster

Why it matters: A working heater keeps you comfortable, but a working defroster is essential for visibility and safety.

  • Ensure the heater blows hot air on all fan speeds
  • Test front and rear window defrosters

Pro tip: Cold air from the heater could mean a stuck thermostat or low coolant. Get it checked ASAP.

5. Replace Your Wiper Blades

Why it matters: Worn blades streak and smear, which is dangerous when dealing with salt spray and slush.

  • Inspect for cracks, tears, or stiff rubber
  • Replace if they streak or chatter

Pro tip: Consider winter-specific blades with rubber covers to prevent ice buildup.

6. Fill Up Your Washer Fluid

Why it matters: You’ll use much more fluid in winter to clear salt and grime. Running out means driving blind.

  • Use winter-rated fluid (rated for sub-zero temps)
  • Keep an extra jug in your trunk

7. Check Your Brakes

Why it matters: Winter driving requires 100% braking efficiency for sudden stops on slippery surfaces.

  • Listen for squealing or grinding
  • Address any pulsations or pulling immediately

8. Check Your Lights

Why it matters: Shorter days mean more driving in the dark. Visibility is key for you and other drivers.

  • Test all exterior bulbs, including high beams and fog lights
  • Clean salt and grime off lenses regularly

9. Check Your 4WD or AWD System

Why it matters: You don’t want to find out your traction system is broken when you’re already stuck in the snow.

  • Engage the system to ensure it works properly
  • Listen for unusual noises

10. Create a Winter Emergency Kit

Why it matters: If you get stranded, you need to stay warm and safe until help arrives.

  • Blanket, flashlight, and jumper cables
  • Ice scraper, small shovel, and sand/litter for traction
  • First aid kit, phone charger, snacks, and water
